For these police KSAs, here’s part of a sample answer…
In my current position as Police Trooper with the Virginia Department of State Police, I am responsible for conducting criminal investigations on a regular basis. I plan, coordinate, and conduct investigations into criminal and traffic offenses. Duties I typically perform include diagramming crime scenes, documenting the chain of custody for evidence, examining evidence for importance, protecting crime scenes, labeling evidence, and searching crime scenes for physical evidence. I perform all of these procedures carefully in order to ensure proper collection, preservation, documentation, and storage of evidence. I also search people and property to obtain evidence.
During my time as a Trooper I have worked on crime scene investigations for homicides, sexual assaults, and burglaries. I have assisted police investigators with packaging and transporting, preparing investigative reports, and testifying in court. This testimony must not only follow the rules of evidence but must also be able to explain, in laymen’s terms, to a jury the significance of the evidence as it relates to scientific proof.
