Things To Remember When Job hunting

If you are job hunting, you should always be aware of your surroundings. And here are some tips on what to look out for and keep in mind as you find your professional place in this world.

  1. Always Try To Be Pleasant – No Matter Where You Are

Even though being nice and pleasant towards those around you is a universal law everyone should aspire to, it is especially important if you are job hunting. Not only should you present yourself as friendly and approachable during the interview, you should show the same characteristics while waiting in the reception area, or standing in front of the building. In fact, your potential employer might be going to the same gym, which means it’s better to practice a friendly attitude as much as you can.

  1. Avoid Becoming A Nuisance

There is a difference between showing enthusiasm and simply getting irritating. Applying for the same job three times a week is not going to get you on the good side of the people handling the interviews. Instead, they will likely get to know you, and skip your application altogether.

You also want to pay attention when you finally do get an interview. For example, stick with short and relevant answers, and give these people some time to make a decision. Since you don’t work there yet, you don’t know the dynamics of their hiring process, and you don’t want to get in their face about it. If you are meant to get the job, they will call you when they need you.

  1. Be Mindful Of Any Questions

People don’t realize they fall in into certain traps. For instance, when a potential employer asks you some information about who you are, they don’t want a complete biography. In fact, they are looking for someone to fill a specific position, and they are looking for certain traits. Thus, they want to know if you are going to fit into the position, based on your professional personality. What they don’t want is to hear about your high-school experiences.

As mentioned earlier, keep your answers short and to the point, even when they are about your professional side. Yes, you want to impress them with big stories, but it’s not going to work.  Check out these tips on job hunting from DST.

  1. Be Mindful Of What People Say

During the interview, the hiring manager will provide you with certain information. This information will either be connected to the work you are going to do or about the company itself. Either way, you want to listen and pay attention the whole time. Because it happens more often than not that candidates ask a question at the interview, only to hear it has already been explained. Naturally, this is not the best way to leave an interview.

  1. Keep Your Phone Off

There is nothing worse for a hiring manager than to be interrupted by the ringing phone of a candidate. And to make things worse, some people actually answer it. If you want to experience the quickest job interview of your life, keep your phone on and answer it when it rings. The next call you’ll be getting WON’T be from the company you just left.

  1. Grooming Is Important

Even though it is unethical to get hired based on your physical features (models excluded), there is nothing wrong with a company who wants professional looking employees. In other words, their employees should be clean, properly dressed, and presentable to the outside world. So, make sure you clean up before going for the interview and dress appropriately.

  1. Be Thankful For The Time You Get

If you get an interview, show the company you appreciate the time they gave you. And it can easily be done via an email on the same day of the interview. Also, if they required more information you didn’t have at that moment, don’t waste time getting it to them. This shows you have character, even when there is a possibility you won’t get the job.
